What better holiday is there to show your Yorkie that you love him or her than Valentine’s Day? Yes, this holiday is no longer just for humans – Valentine’s Day is perfect for creating something special for your most devoted furry family member. It will be wonderful to include your well-socialized, little, furry BFF in your plans. Depending on what your plans are, you can bring your pup along. There are plenty of coffee shops and bistros that welcome well-mannered dogs. But, if you would rather stay inside we have some tips for how to include your Yorkie in your Valentine’s Day plans!

How To Celebrate Valentine’s Day With Your Yorkie

Being that Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to express one’s love, you can use it to:

  • Take your Yorkie on a long walk.
  • Make your little one a tasty homemade treat or meal.
  • Share your special doggy Valentine on Instagram for the world to see.

These are just a few things you can do to include your pup in your Valentine’s Day plans. Also, if you plan to share this day of love with a human, you can include your Yorkie in that too. If you have enough time, you can teach your dog how to ‘deliver’ Valentine’s Day invitations to your special sweetie. Simply add on a few special touches. Tie a red heart-shaped balloon to your Yorkie’s collar, give him/her the invitation to hold it in their mouth, and direct him/her to walk to your special someone. Just remind your dog to “drop it” or “release” when the recipient takes the invitation – and as always, let your little Yorkie know that s/he is a good boy. Or girl, as the case may be.

Take Your Yorkie For A Walk

If you plan on taking your Yorkie on a long walk for Valentine’s Day, hook up your pup’s leash and allow their nose to guide your adventure. Dogs have up to 300 million olfactory receptors in its nose, compared to humans who only have 6 million (source). Oftentimes when we walk our dogs we’re in a hurry, or only half present. Take this special day to really focus on your Yorkie on this walk. Allow your dog to explore their surroundings, sniffing and collecting information from spots s/he selects on your walk. By doing this you’ll find you likely go for a much longer walk than normal, and your Yorkie gets a good mental workout in addition to physical exercise. There is nothing like a good, long walk to tell your dog happy Valentine’s Day.

Yummy Homemade Treat

Another way to show your Yorkie that s/he owns your heart is by making them a yummy homemade treat. Now dogs love all sorts of food, and while it seems like a good idea to give your dog ‘whatever s/he wants,’ remember their little tummies can be sensitive. Keep the treat that you make within the realm of what your dog typically eats, but add a little bit of flair. Here’s our recommendation for a scrumptious and special treat sure to please your Yorkie:

Valentine’s Day Salmon Burgers

  • 1 6 oz can salmon, no salt
  • 1/2 C steamed green beans
  • 1/2 C steamed spinach
  • 1/4 C steamed sweet potato
  • 10 blueberries
  • 2 parsley leaves

Directions: steam the vegetables and potato, and allow them to cool. Once cooled, place the vegetables, potato, blueberries, and salmon in a food processor and gently incorporate all ingredients together. The texture should be like a salmon burger. Carefully remove them from the food processor and form them into 2-4 sliders, depending on the size of your dog. Place a small burger on a nice glass plate, top with a small sprinkling of chopped parsley and serve to your sweet Yorkie.
