Music is one of the few things that can bring people together regardless of where they come from, their personalities, or their preferences. On a molecular level, most if not all humans understand rhythm, atmosphere, and what makes a quality song.

One of the other few things that we can almost all agree on is that pets are the best (shoutout to you, Yorkie lovers!). There’s nothing more rewarding than coming home to a pet who’s incredibly excited to see you and loves you unconditionally!

So, music and pets—are the universal loves of humans worldwide. What if we told you that there’s a new fad that can bring the two together?

That’s right, Spotify has come out with a new service, Spotify for Pets, which claims to be able to curate a specific playlist for you and your dog or cat to enjoy. It takes a few things into account regarding your furry friend, and voila—you’ll have a special playlist to enjoy with your pets.

Spotify Has the Pawfect Playlist for You And Your Yorkie

This service has drawn a bit of skepticism, and it’s totally understandable. What kind of service can really take information about your pet to create a playlist? Could it all be just a gimmick? Perhaps it’s just a marketing scheme.

It could be. Our goal here today is to give you all the information you might want about this new service so you can be the judge. In this article, we’ll walk you through the playlist-creating process and give you an idea of what Spotify for Pets can do.

So, without further ado, let’s get into our overview of Spotify for Pets.

How to Make a Spotify Pet Playlist

Dogs and Spotify

The first thing we’ll cover is the process. Surely, you want to try Spotify for Pets for yourself using your own beloved pet. So, here we’ll walk you through the simple process of making a Spotify pet playlist.

The first thing you’ll need to do is visit Spotify for Pets here. Once there, you should see a landing page asking you to pick what type of pet you’re making the playlist for. So, choose according to the pet you’d like to jam with! Some options include the classic dog, cat, and hamster, but also the iguana and bird as options.

Once you’ve chosen your pet, you’ll move on to the next page, where you’ll be asked a series of questions about your pet. They want to get a bit of info on how energetic, social, or curious your furry friend may be. In effect, they hope to use this information to curate a playlist that truly represents their individual personality.

Move the sliders to indicate your pet’s tendencies, and then click Next. Here, it’s time to add your pet’s name and an adorable picture of them to complete the step. Of course, you’ll want to do this so that the playlist is as personalized as possible!

When you click Next here, you’ll be asked to hang tight while Spotify finalizes its playlist. Once the algorithm is done creating the perfect list of songs to play, Spotify will present you with your new pet playlist!

Will The Playlist Be For Pets Or Owners?

Create Playlist for your Pet for Free

Spotify for Pets claims that the playlist will be algorithmically created based on your own listening preferences and history as well as your pet’s personality. Overall, their goal is to make you a playlist that will remind you of your pet when you give it a listen. It’s a bonus if your pet loves to jam out with you to the music!

The playlist is generally centered around your pet, but in all, the music is generally geared towards the owner. It’s a great way to enjoy music with your little friend, but have you ever wondered if they can appreciate the music the way we do?

Can Animals Enjoy Music?

Playlist for your Pets

A burning question you might find yourself asking right now is this: can animals hear or appreciate music the same way humans can? It’s interesting to think about—maybe once or twice you’ve tried to play music and see how your pet reacts.

Chances are, you haven’t seen clear processing of human music in your pet. After all, animals’ brains can be similar to ours at times, but music has always seemed to be uniquely human. So is there any way that they can hear the same things we do when we play our favorite music?

There have been a few experiments and research initiatives to find out whether animals can recognize music. Before we get into the findings, it’s important to understand a few things about the psychology of pets.

How Animals Process Sounds

Cats, dogs, iguanas, and other animals do not have the same vocal range or pitch processing as humans. Our vocal cords and ears are completely different in size and shape from those of our pets. Therefore, it’s extremely unlikely that an animal can appreciate the exact same music as is meant for human ears. As that goes, animals actually can recognize music—it just needs to be tailored for their ears instead!

Studies found that chimpanzees could recognize and process music if it was curated within their species-specific range. So, if the rhythm was sped up and the pitch transposed upward, they would react by getting energized and more upbeat in the mood. Otherwise, if the chimp music was slowed down, they would become calmer.

The same would be true for your pet, but chances are that music actually intended for pets wouldn’t sound so great to humans.

But, that doesn’t make human music inherently unpleasant to your pet—in fact, if your pup sees you dancing happily to music, they are sure to want to join in on the fun!

How Accurate Is The Playlist?

Once you’ve created your Spotify for Pets playlist, you can judge how accurate it is. In our experience at least, we found the playlist to be somewhat accurate depending on the information we gave.

We tried making a playlist with a few different pet profiles: a friendly and upbeat dog, an apathetic cat, and a curious iguana. Based on the information we gave, we’d say that while the playlist won’t be perfect, Spotify for Pets does make a valiant effort to curate a playlist with quality music that successfully ranges in tone depending on your pet’s personality.
